Home > Safer Sex > Reality (Female Condom) Marketed under the brand name Reality, female condoms are an alternative to male condoms, and a way for women to take control of their safety and sexuality. A female condom looks like an oversized male condom with a clear flexible ring inside. Reality can be inserted up to eight hours before sex, but most women insert Reality between two and twenty minutes before sex. To insert, apply lubricant either on the penis or inside the condom, squeeze the inner ring (when properly inserted, this ring should cover the cervix), and insert it into the vagina. The outer ring should remain outside the body holding open the entrance to the condom. Reality is a lubricated condom, but the amount of lube is minimal so it may be more enjoyable to add some extra. When beginning intercourse, it is important to enter inside the female condom and not under it. Since the female condom is made of polyurethane and not latex, it is a good alternative if one partner is allergic to latex. Polyurethane can also feel more natural because it conducts heat (which latex does not) and will warm up once it is inside your body. Never use both a male and a female condom together because the resulting friction can cause slippage or breakage. Never reuse a female condom; dispose of it after use. Reality condoms can also be used for anal sex. In this case, be sure to remove the inner ring, and then use the condom as you would a male condom. As far as statistics go, when used properly, female condoms are just as protective against STIs, HIV, and pregnancy as male condoms. SSIS sells female condoms for 25 cents each (much lower than store prices). Because it is important to use the female condom correctly, please pick up a leaflet at SSIS, which has more information about Reality and how to use it. Source: |
